The Stephens Family – Sailor Bar Fair Oaks Session

It was a smokey afternoon before the first rains when I met the Stephens family at Sailor Bar in Fair Oaks. Friends of friends, the irony was that I had photographed those friends just that morning when the smoke from the Camp Fire had momentarily dissipated. It rolled in as the day progressed and cast a haze over the pond and river but didn’t stop us from having a wonderful session as the orange sun set.

Photographing two teenage boys was so fun. I loved making them cringe and snicker with dopey questions and mom kisses.

The Evans Family – Orangevale Family Session

I have known the Evans family for five years and this is the first opportunity I have had to photograph them. Their youngest, Lily, goes to school with my daughter and I have enjoyed capturing her on field trips and school celebrations but the rest of her family have been a tad camera shy. In those five years mom, Nicole, has also become a good friend, and we share book club discussions and Halloweens together. It goes without saying that I love this family.

Families tell me all the time “we’re not good in front of the camera”. I totally don’t believe them. There really is no such thing. There are only bad photos of good people.

The Tongs – Auburn Fall Family Session

I photographed this fun-loving family 5 years ago now. Crazy! Not sure where the time went but so glad that I had the opportunity to connect again back at their grandparents’ family home in Auburn. Just like last time, we ran, explored, giggled, hugged, and there was even an explosive laughter incident complete with snorted boogers. (I spared you those photos but the moment was utterly priceless.)

I hope it’s not 5 years before we get to do this again because these kids will be teens and they’ll be far too cool for my antics.

The Shapiro Family – Ancil Hoffman Park Family Photo Session

This will be the second time I have photographed the extended Shapiro family. The first time was 5 years ago and, since then, Samantha (who originally hired me), has assisted me on several weddings, and her and her brother, Matt, acquired significant others who they brought to this year’s session.

We met at Ancil Hoffman Park, this year, looking for some green grass (which is uncharacteristic in early Fall) and some Autumn colors. The leaves had only just started to change but the light was warm and beautiful.

I love the Shapiros. There is so much genuine warmth and I appreciate so much their trust in my process; they totally go with the flow, commit to my games, ignore me and interact with one another when I ask them to. It’s never forced, it’s always fun, and I love the photos we captured again this year.

The Fongs – Capitol Park Sacramento Family Session

The Fongs, simply put, are family. Watching these kids grow for the last 13 years has been magical. Photographing that for the last 10 has been an honor.

If you would like to follow their journey, you can see their sessions from 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013  by clicking on the years.

Which is your favorite? Mine is the 2014 session. I loved that one because it was so playful. I also enjoyed my latte at the end 😉 Not that I don’t like this year’s session. I particularly love how Noelle is part-teenager, part-kid still and how that comes through in these photos, some mature and sophisticated and then silly faces with her brother and the love for her little Poo Bear.

Here are the 2019 Fongs…
