One of my best friends in the world is a grandma!
Vickie and I have known one another for a little over a decade and have grown a deep and lasting friendship during that time, sharing life’s ups and downs. Unfortunately, there have been quite our fair share of downs but that’s when the real mettle of your friendship gets tested, isn’t it? When the going gets tough, friendships either grow and expand to include all the hard stuff, or they shrink away, unable to hold the weight.
So it’s a wonderful thing to be celebrating something so wonderful as a granddaughter with Vickie, her son and daughter-in-law. I visited them at home in West Sacramento recently, to photograph them doting on baby Nora. And dote they did. I have photographed very many new families but I don’t think I have ever seen a couple quite so delighted by their new child. Not only were they surprisingly relaxed and engaged for two people who are supposed to be sleep-deprived and bleary-eyed, but their faces lit up with genuine wonder every time they looked at Nora. Gah! I could have stayed and photographed them all day.
(Don’t worry, they didn’t have to literally drag me out. Well.. almost.)
Nora is the spitting image of her dad when he was little and I see so much of my friend in her already. It was magical to look into her eyes and feel like I already knew a little piece of her. Sniff.
